Meeting Recap Archive

March 2009

The following information was shared at the March meeting:

- From Susanna, in June Betty Crocker is coming out with three new gluten free mixes for cookies, brownies, and a cake mix. For more information go to http://killthegluten.blogspot.com/.

- From Jeanette, Sam's Club was carrying a very good gluten free cracker made by Crunchmaster. They're multi-grain and oven baked and substantial enough to hold up well in dips. She reported that she had heard that a Pei Wei Asian restaurant was coming to the new shopping area where New Frontiers is. Pei Wei is a "fast food" Asian restuarant with several gluten free selections on their menu. They're a subsidiary of P.F. Chang's.

- From Andi, she's newly diagnosed and was finding some gluten free products at the Super WallMart in Cottonwood that were more reasonably priced than at natural food stores.

- From Barb, muffins to taste made from Pamela's chocolate cake mix - very moist and tastey. She also talked about making cookies from Pamela's brownie mix because she had not been satisfied with the brownies. Jeanette said her experience was that the brownies came out fine if you cooked them twice as long as the directions indicated.

The also talked about the fact that you could take a tax deduction for purchasing food required by a medical condition. The catch is that it's not for what you spend on your gluten free food, it's the difference between what you pay for the gluten free product and what a similar non-gluten-free product costs. That's a lot of work but might be worth trying to keep track of because over time, that could be a lot of money.
